During my last trip to the US, I've stopped for a few days in Washington D.C. and I couldn't help it but think about SF!

  • There is no Georgia Street but there is a Georgia Ave.
  • The subway looks more or less like the one in the game. The stations are built almost like we see in the game, with a central deck and a railway on each side. The metro cars are grey, but there are not exactly square shapped like in SF.
  • There are no parks named only "Washington Park" and I haven't seen a park that could have inspired the design of the one in the game.
  • There is a subway station named "Capitol South" which is very close to the Capitol. Although I haven't been inside, I don't think it is directly located under the Capitol, nor that you can access it from the Capitol itself.

Maybe it is some sort of compromise: the action takes place in a known city (so that it feels more realistic), but locations from it are fictionnal so that nobody can recognize it. I know that some cities have expressed concerns about games in which terrorist action takes place on their territory.

I went to Washington D.C. for a holiday back a few years ago, as well as New York and Los Angeles.

I never thought once about Syphon Filter while there.

But I can tell you St. George in Syphon Filter 3 looks nothing like it.

Its not an Aboriginal Village, its a full blown city with buildings etc.

Americans have no knowledge of Australia

Wow, couldn't know about that one. The developpers probably just picked a random named that appeared on the map of Australia and that wasn't Sydney or Canberra...

Btw, they came close to setting the Carthage missions of TOS in Toronto instead. But because of paranoid politicians in Quebec, they backed off. I would have been curious to see how they would have depicted Toronto. Anyway, they still have the Montreal subway map on pannels in Carthage 1.

Mate... most of them think that Sydney is the Capitol, that we ride Kangaroo’s to work, Koala bears are deadly animals, anyone who lives in the outback is a serial killer (wait, that’s the English), we all have skin cancer, we all get pissed and fight each other at the pubs (thank David Letterman for that), all the woman talk like hobbits, etc, etc.

Even Hollywood has picked up on this; in the movie War of the Worlds the main character (Tom Cruise) says “between me and my brother we know everything” his daughter asks “Ok, what’s the capital of Australia?” “Um... yeah... my brother knows that one...”

What do you reckon it is mate?

The educational system in the U.S.A., the fact that they are vain or do they just not care about anyone but themselves?

Trying to stay on topic, I've not been to the USA, never even left my country (it’s a long way to go anywhere in this part of the world) but there are places around the world that I’m determined to see for my own eyes and the US is one of them (don’t worry so is Canada, I love really cold weather).

I suppose it’s just a trip over the border for you, like me driving to Sydney (380km) or Melbourne (650km) which I do often. I want to go and see the Aussie Cricket team retain the Ashes in England, but we’ll see.

I do recommend a trip to the USA. I've told people stories about my trip multiple times.

My favourite would be the Waitress at Hard Rock cafe. I ask her where the bin is. Then ten minutes later I had spent the time trying to describe what one is. Finally after something clicked and she said "Oh you mean TRASH can".

Talk about stupid.

America has the highest budget for education then any other country, there ignorance about the outside world is a result of there education system focusing only on America culture and history.

While in beautiful Australia, our education system never fails to neglect any part of foreign culture.

Americans are 300 millions. Many of them are well educated and very open to the rest of the world. And another many of them are not that much educated and not interested in what's outside the greatest country in the world.

But I think it is not very different in most of the "civilized" countries. I'm sure that here in Canada, the majority of the people don't really care about other countries and have probably never set foot anywhere but in Canada. I'm even sure that most of them have even never left their province!
